Can I Trim My Own Trees?

You’ve seen it before – a guy on an internet video cutting a tree limb that accidentally lands on his car or house.  You have a good laugh, and realize, “I really need to do something about that tree in the back yard. Surely I won’t have the same issues as that idiot!” So, it’s off to Home Depot or Lowe’s (or the tool place of your choice) to purchase or rent a chainsaw or pole pruner, and you’re all set to go, right?

There is a reason you never say, “how hard can it be?”  Inevitably, the answer to that question is “way harder than I thought.”  Aside from being hard work, it can be very time-consuming, and you can really do damage to the tree, your home, your car, and landscaping, not to mention yourself.  Professional tree services know the biology of trees so that they can properly prune your tree, they have state-of-the-art equipment to be able to do the job safely and successfully, and the best ones are certified arborists, which means they’ve had intensive training to make sure they are environmentally and safety conscious.

Professional tree trimming can come with a bit of sticker shock from a price standpoint, but here, you truly get what you pay for.  A cheap offer to trim your tree(s) will yield poor results, from an uneven, unsightly trim to doing irreparable damage to the tree, inviting insects and disease, which will result in the tree needing to be removed down the road (and costing even more.)  Pay a little more now for a certified arborist or pay a lot later – it’s worth it!

Does My Tree Need Trimmed Or Removed?

Tree care is very important for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which being the health of the tree and the effect it can have on the shade of your property.  A tree might look to be overgrown and you may be thinking that removal is the best option but it may just need trimmed by a certified arborist.  What is the best way to tell?

Tree Removal vs. Tree Trimming

If the tree is merely overgrown and not encroaching on your foundation or other landscaping, tree trimming is the better choice.  Proper trimming ensures your tree will remain healthy; simply chopping off branches and limbs can invite insects and disease, not to mention an uneven appearance.  This can also cause more growth and a need for increased pruning, which can shorten the life of the tree.

An improperly trimmed tree may then need to be removed if it has been infected with disease or insects.  In addition, if the tree is interfering with property structure like downspout drains, power lines or your home’s foundation, it may need removed.  Our team is very cognizant of the environment surrounding the tree and will safely perform the service required.

Our certified arborists have the knowledge and expertise of tree biology to be able to properly assess any tree on your property, and will be able to help you make an informed decision on whether tree removal or tree trimming is the right solution for you. Reach out today!
